"The Great Hover-Train Robbery" Test Drive Meme

"THE GREAT HOVER-TRAIN ROBBERY" TEST DRIVE MEME

The Time Trapper, the being responsible for bringing people into the Legion's universe, is up to some strange tricks! It's now creating illusions of alternate universes and dumping the Legionnaires into them to try to test them as Legionnaires. Each time this happens, the captives -- er, participants have knowledge of the scenario, their role, and what they're supposed to accomplish planted into their heads, but still remember who they once were.

To complicate things, the Legionnaires from the 31st century aren't the only ones pulled into this adventure. Strange people from many worlds are being yanked in and finding themselves thrust right into the heart of these conflicts.

These universes technically are just illusions (probably!) and all the participants have an inherent knowledge of this placed in their heads, but it's up to them if they believe it -- and the danger is real. If you die in one of these scenarios you stay dead. This time everyone is being dumped into a scenario where they're dealing with...

THE WILD WEST (SORT OF)
THE SETTING

The planet Osiris is a frontier world, on the very edges of UP space. Originally colonized by Earthers of many species, Osiris has a diverse makeup just like Earth, with many different species living together. Due to being surrounded by a particular configuration of stars, star weights crush and twist spacetime near the planet, making both threshold travel and conventional FTL possible only every few months. This has led to the Osirans leading a very self-sufficient lifestyle. This also means that the Osirans have a mix of advanced technology and simpler, more reliable machines that can easily be repaired without outside supplies.

The end result is a frontier planet that has a mix of advanced technology and simpler living, resembling a slightly more technologically advanced Wild West.

While some ships are used for travel across the planet, there is an impressive hover-train network that allows for long-range and short-range travel over the planet's surface. The characters will find themselves on a hover-train passing through the rugged, dusty wilderness. Due to occasional rockslides, and dust and electrical storms in the area, the train is a low speed local train...

One that's under attack by bandits! The bandits are riding on hover-bikes and armed with blasters.

While this is possibly one of the Time Trapper's strange pocket dimensions, this dimension is very similar to the game universe, and whether or not the sentient beings in need of saving are real or not is impossible to tell. It's a bad idea to risk not helping them in case real lives are on the line.

Based on player preference, for the purposes of the meme, characters can either lose powers, retain their canon powers, or find themselves with new powers. It's up to you. Characters may also find themselves in Wild West style clothing and in possession of stun blasters, but this is also player preference. For any scenario that would typically be done only once, like stopping the train, multiple players can still play the same scenario out because of the Time Trapper creating multiple timelines of the setting.

SCENARIO A: TRAINTOP BATTLE
With bandits jumping on the train, characters have a chance to participate in a classic traintop battle, either in dangerous blaster/stun weapon shootouts, or in hand to hand combat. This is the best place to keep the bandits from getting on board, but watch out! Occasional overhead obstacles and tunnels mean certain death for anyone that doesn't duck in time.

SCENARIO B: HOSTAGES
Trouble's brewing inside! With so many bandits jumping onboard, a few are sure to make it inside unscathed. One of the passenger compartments is now occupied, with bandits guarding each exit and holding the civilians inside as hostages.

A frontal assault will be tricky, with the passengers in such a risky position, but maybe there's another way to get inside? Like those handy vents on top of the train, or perhaps through the maintenance hatches accessible via a dangerous climb through the undercarriage of the train.

SCENARIO C: DIVERTING THE TRAIN
Oh no, it seems the bandits have diverted the train, planning on making it crash after their robbery to kill any witnesses. The only chance of saving it is knocking some of the bandits off their hover-cycles and stealing them so the characters can ride ahead and hit the railroad switch to divert the train back to a safe track. The only problem with this is that anyone stealing a hover-cycle can't do it alone. One person needs to steer and they need another to help shield their driver with their powers, or give their driver covering fire. or they'll never survive the drive to the rail switch.

SCENARIO D: STOPPING THE TRAIN
All other efforts have failed and the train is careening out of control towards a downed bridge that was taken out by the bandits with explosives. The characters have to make their way to the locomotive at the front of the train and work together to figure out what levers to pull to stop the train in time -- without the help of the currently unconscious engineer and with only minutes to spare. There's a paper manual in the engine car that can potentially help them...but it's 1000 pages long with a very badly organized index.

Good luck!

SCENARIO E: WILD CARD!
Perhaps the characters find themselves on the side of the bandits and have to decide if they want to switch sides or follow through with the robbery. Or instead of a cowboy adventurer already poised to fight the bandits, maybe your character starts as a passenger on the train, and has to act from the inside of a hostage situation. Maybe some bandits fly in on buggalos and the characters have to steal one to fight them in an aerial battle. Or perhaps the characters have to race to the last train car and work together to unhinge it before the fire on board it ignites several tons of explosives. The choice is yours!

OOC INFO

Current players in game can jump into this and do starters if they like so they can play with new players and each other. This meme will count as part of the game canon for those that opt in, though they'll find their memories somewhat fuzzy afterward. These threads can count toward your AC, however the "new CR" credit cannot be applied since not every character joining in is guaranteed to join the game. This takes place after "Tinker, Tailor, Hero, Spy," but before "Welcome to Murderworld."

Potential players can use this as a standard test drive and may use these threads as their log samples. However, at least one post in their thread must fit the requirements for apps, both in length (200 words) and in quality. If you do plan on using a thread as a sample, please make sure the writing throughout your threads is a good example of your writing skills and has some solid examples of the character's voice.

Potential players can also opt to keep these threads as game canon when they app in, so that their character remembers the scenario and then suddenly finds themselves in the game universe. However, this is opt in and players can choose to introduce their characters fresh if they'd prefer that and no other characters will remember they were there. Please just note which you'd like in the additional info field on your app.

If you are considering apping to the game, currently 7 of 40 player slots are available. (Note: Recently, the player cap decreased from 50 to 40, which means the game is now closer to cap.) The character limit is 4 characters per player. You can also scope out some of the game's upcoming plots here to get an idea of what kind of plots are in the game and what's to come.

Non-players who like the meme but aren't really considering apping to the game are free to jump in. The more the merrier! The Time Trapper wants a confusing situation and will enjoy the chaos of lots of strange people trying to figure out what's going on.

Tsunami | Wings of Fire

[personal profile] waterfight 2016-09-20 05:20 am (UTC)(link)
B.

Tsunami wasn't really a fan of this whole 'desert' thing to start with. Comes with being a SeaWing. The lack of water and the heat weren't critical yet, but it was enough to make the already snappy dragon a little snappier than normal. Hunched on top of one of the rapidly moving train cars, she has her long tail tucked around herself to make sure that it doesn't get caught on some passing terrain or the train itself. Why did scavengers (no, here they call themselves humans apparently) build everything so tiny--she was never going to get inside without drastic measure. Glumly, she reaches out to prod a talon against one of the vents--big enough for a human to get through and maybe her head and neck but no way was she getting inside unless they ripped the roof off.

Hey. That's an idea. She reaches down to where the roof meets the wall of the train car and begins poking at it experimentally, just to see if she can get a talon through. Someone might want to say something--but then again, she is a dragon...

[Traintop Battle]
Honestly? This wasn't all that different from Pandora. You had a planet that actually seemed kind of similar to it, right down to the hover-train network and bandits looking to make an easy score while also wanting to get their murder on. Once the bandits actually showed up Gaige was all like "Yeah, okay." Seriously, you'd think people on this world hadn't actually dealt with bandits before.

At least these guys weren't shouting about meat and wanting to rip off your face and floss their teeth with your skin.

So, you know, that was cool.

But anyways, you had one tiny redhead packing an awful lot of firepower and she was mostly just shooting away at the bandits.

"Come on you bunch of jokers. I'll take you all on!"

And she would, too.

No, really, please provide some backup. She's woefully outnumbered.

[Post-fight looting]
Alright, the bandits in this train car had all been taken care of. And by "taken care of" she meant that they had all been indiscriminately murdered because that was kind of what Gaige did. Pandora did a lot of things to you if you actually managed to survive. One of those things was heavily emphasizing the importance of human life. Kill them and take their stuff before the bandits did the same to you. And as a vault hunter, Gaige was all about that sweet loot.

Some people would likely frown on the fact that Gaige was scavenging through the newly deceased for anything she could take. Gaige would kindly refer to these people "losers" before going back to her looking for more cash or other sweet loot.

"Come on, there's gotta be something here worth taking! I do not want to know that I just wasted all those bullets."

"Whaaaaaat are you thinking of doing?" Grif sounds apprehensive. He's ducked down on the roof of the train, having found a handhold, and has to yell a bit because the wind makes it a little difficult up here. Mostly, though? Apprehensive.

Apparently, they're working together. There's something in the dream-logic of the scenario that makes this make sense, even though it doesn't.

He's hoping nobody inside the train has noticed them thumping around on the roof, but he also knows his luck is usually not that good.

Tsunami scrunched her wings in a little closer, trying to keep them from flaring. The rush of the train's motion worried her--it felt like the ocean's currents, threatening to send her hurtling off the rapidly moving vehicle. An annoyed grunt comes from her and she hooks a talon into the roof, then tugs it free again as she looks at Grif.

"I was thinking of taking the roof off--not like I can fit through these tiny little holes."

"But we're standing on that!" Grif protested, gesturing with his free hand.

Not that he had a better suggestion.

This was just kind of not something people usually decided to do around him.

"And? I have wings." Tsunami seems to have forgotten that Grif, being a human, lacks those important appendages.

Keith | Voltron: Legendary Defenders

[personal profile] redpaladin 2016-09-20 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
[ A ]

Keith wasn't really sure what to expect from falling into that corrupted wormhole, giant robot lion and all. Suddenly being on a train in Space Wild West was not even close to the scenarios he might have entertained.

He spares his strangely setting appropriate clothing a withering stare, tosses off the hat, and then curses the fact that his bayard's been traded for a bunch of weird looking guns. Guns. He wasn't the gunner of their outfit. That was Lance or Hunk, wherever they ended up. Looks like he would have to make due on his own. The thought leaves a sour taste in his mouth but he presses on before he can dwell on it.

After the bandits make their appearance he doesn't waste time making his way to the top of the train. Whatever was going on here, these guys were obviously bad news and he wasn't about to let them take over. Not to mention he needed to let off some steam.

The stun blasters last about half a minute before he throws them at the nearest bandit in frustration and opts to go for a more direct approach. His fast and light on his feet and all but wails on the bandits pushing them back off the train.

"You're not getting any farther than this!"

He's doing okay, but they're probably about to overwhelm him. Assist?

[ C ]

Well, this whole operation sure went to shit pretty fast. The bandits nearly took the train over and managed to divert it towards an unfinished line with a conveniently unfinished bridge. Keith was half way to figuring out how to safely get two hundred people to jump off a train when someone helpfully pointed out that there was a railroad switch up ahead and the train could be set back on a safe path if someone could get to it.

He eyes one of the approaching bandits and fucking leaps off the roof of the train and shoves the bandit off his own damn hover bike. Whoever he was working with up to this point had better be paying attention, because he's calling after you.

"Hurry up, We don't have any time! Cover me!"

"I don't!" Grif yells. He looks at the roof, then scrambles around to the side Tsunami isn't positioned to tear into.

"Alright look. Rip up half of it, and we go in through the top."

It's the best he can do. If they're gonna go through the roof, they're gonna go through the roof the... well, not quite "smart" way but maybe almost?

Pidge kind of thinks the cowgirl duds she's got on are kind of cute. She can't say the same for Keith, but watching him wail on the bandit while a giant hanging sign arm is about to sweep them all off the train and onto the dirt.

She's still got two blasters and ammo to spare, but it's probably quicker to forgo the whole thing and just scream "Kieth, DUCK!"

[personal profile] redpaladin 2016-09-21 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
It's probably a good thing she did, because he would have been too caught up in the fight to see it before it was too late.

He snaps his head up, spots the offending sign arm and then ducks as it clocks the bandit, knocking him over the side. Close call.

"Thanks," he manages before he he puts his hands up again, watching the bandits chasing the train on either side of them. "They just keep coming!"

"So stop 'em!"

She tosses him one of her blasters. From a close distance. She doesn't trust the gun not to take a wild bounce and fall to the floor.

"Maybe if we figure out what they're after, we can stop them from getting it!"

[personal profile] redpaladin 2016-09-21 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
He catches, but only because not catching it would probably end worse than him trying to fire a fucking blaster. He holds it in what he hopes is an actual safe way to hold this thing.

"I think they want the whole train, Pidge."

One of the bandits gets close enough to leap onto the train. Keith fires approximately three shots before it clips the guys shoulder and he tumbles off.
waterfight: (When Clay has ideas)

"Only half? I'm not sure I can fit inside that..." It's true. Tsunami still isn't full grown (she has a year or two to go), but she's already at least as long as the train car and human sized doors are perhaps big enough for her to fit her head and neck into, maybe a foreleg at best.
isthisapidge: By ace-pidge.tumblr.com ([26])

"Then we that's what we keep them from getting! And careful! That thing only has so many shots"

But he's holding the blaster basically right as far as she knows, so he turns her attention to the new set of bandits in their way.

"We need to get to the controls before they do! I think have an idea!"

Cayde-6 | Destiny

[personal profile] lostthebet 2016-09-22 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Hostages

See, what you need for something like this to be successful is someone who is both able and willing to climb in through a window on a moving train, and someone who is capable of invisibility. Cayde's got plenty of all of that in spades.

So if you're a hostage, you might get the benefit of a slight shift of light, a little shiver like a heatwave, before the window slides open and a moment later there's a cloaked Exo looking around with what can only be described as a smug smile. He holds his arms out wide.

"Anybody call for a rescue?"

Diverting the Train

This was absolutely Cayde's jam. This is what he missed, cooped up in the Tower, sending other Guardians out to do all the fun stuff. It's with a whoop of excitement that he leaps from the train onto one of the hover-cycles. He perches on the back, one hand grabbing the edge of the seat for balance, and then grabs the driver by the shirt collar, and yanks him off the bike before he has a chance to react.

He slips smoothly into the driver's seat, the hover-cycle fishtailing slightly before he's able to get it back under control. Now it's just a matter of --

"Shit." A shot fizzes by his head, and he jerks the bike to the side, then curls his head to the side to check his six, just narrowly missing another hit. "Yeah hey, anybody wanna ride bitch? I could use some coverfire."

Lal Soong - Star Trek TNG Novel Canon

[personal profile] usescontractions 2016-09-23 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
[ Traintop Battle ]

Suddenly appearing on top of a speeding train might be shocking, and likely upsetting, to most. To Lal however, it's more of an annoyance. This isn't the first time she's been suddenly whisked away against her will. This time though? She's not dressed for the setting. She's trying to work out exactly what's happened and where she is with her hair and skirt whipping around in the wind. It rather aggravating.

Plus there are a bunch of thugs advancing menacingly. She doesn't appear to be giving them much thought though.

"Computer, please decrease the train's speed by 86%!" She commands loudly into the air. Of course, nothing happens. The probability of being inside of a working holosuite was abysmally low, but she had to check anyway. She's still pretty sure it must be a simulation though, and that following through with the story will likely be the way to exit.

So she allows the bandits to come at her. The first takes a swing and she grabs his fist, stopping it instantly. He tries with his other hand, and she stops it too before lifting him easily and tossing him overboard without a backward glance.

That's when the rest of the gang ready their blasters.

[ Stopping the train ]

Lal knows that so many simulations tend to be cliches, but this one is really taking the cake. Stopping the train before it plummets off a bridge?

"I can't believe a hovering train can be derailed by a blown up bridge." She states with a sigh and the most dramatic eye roll she can manage. Still though, she's not wasting any time knocking bandits aside to help clear the way to the front of the train.

[D]

Sometimes, distraction was the best thing to use to her advantage. Allura used the attacks from the other heroes to force her way into the train and to the locomotive. She piloted a castle that was also a spaceship, she could figure out how to stop a train, right?

Staring at the control panel, and all the levers, she realized this might be harder than originally thought... and reached for the firestarter passing as a manual.

... This was going to be much more complicated than she thought ...

[E]

[Ok, I suck at starters and haven't had enough coffee this morning. Feel free to drag her into something!]

With some muffled (probably familiar) yelling on the other side of the locomotive where the car meets the rest of the train and a volley of blaster shots, Keith bursts into the engine room.

"How's it looking?"

He doesn't really want to rush her but, uh. They might all die in the next few minutes if this stupid train isn't stopped. He stares at the manual with increasingly wide eyes.

"Oh."

Hunk stares at the ventilation shaft opening, deeply doubtful of this whole plan. At first, saving people sounded way more up his alley than fighting on flying bikes or on a train or whatever, but now he's staring down this tiny opening and imagining how embarrassing it's gonna be if he ends up needing to get rescued.

"Are we super sure there's no one on this train who can like... walk through doors? Is that a thing? That's probably... probably the best way to get in, right?"

D

"Now this is just--who thought of this?" He gestures to the manual, feeling vaguely insulted by the complete lack of organization. With a huff, Hunk tosses the book aside, and starts glowering down the controls himself.

"Like, okay, I'm not the neatest guy around, and my notes aren't the easiest--I don't even really take notes too often, so..."

He taps at each of the levers, trying to parse out the logic behind them based straight out of intuition. Maybe one makes the train fly. "But even I can put a halfway decent instruction manual together, probably, that's the whole point of it."

Jason looks up from checking on the engineer -- he appears to only be knocked out and not dead. It's certainly a relief to the former Praetor, although if they can't figure out how to stop the train it might not be for long. He steps forward, peering over the larger teen's shoulder, to see if he can help. The answer is probably no -- Leo was the mechanic and machine expert of his group of friends -- but it doesn't hurt to try. Maybe something rubbed off.

But, no, it hadn't. That or the book is really that confusing. Jason shakes his head, "Maybe the person who wrote the manual is actually one of those people who hate reading them." He's pretty sure that counts as irony. Jason doesn't bat an eye when Hunk chunks the manual and, instead, peers out the window to gauge how much time they have until it will likely be too late.

"Well, we could start pulling at random...but we might not have the time," he says in a voice that is surprisingly calm. He adjusts the thin, golden framed glasses on his face, "I could try my luck flipping to random pages while you're looking over the levers. Not really sure what other options we may have...unless you know someone more powerful than a locomotive." Jason was pretty sure now wasn't the time to be making jokes, but when you faced life or death situations on a regular basis you started to become immune to it. Maybe Leo had rubbed off on him after all.

Luckily Keith was coming up right behind him. He looks at the vent and then side glances at Hunk. He could probably fit in those vents but that still left Hunk on the outside and as confident as he was in his ability to punch people, there were probably a few too many for even him.

"I heard someone mention maintenance hatches," Keith offers helpfully. Though, yeah those WERE under the damn train. Hm.

Grif's fast now, he guesses he could catch up with the train, but falling off would hurt and probably put him out of commission first. This sucks. This sucks and he hates it.

He pushes up off the roof and picks his way over closer to where Tsunami's head is, so he has to yell less.

"Alright you know what? I'm going in. I go in and you tear off the roof while I do that and maybe neither of us gets shot."

'Maybe neither of us gets shot' sounds pretty good and optimistic to him right now.
