LEGION 5TH YEAR REUNION
It's been five years since the defeat of Chronoblivion. The invitations were sent out on the comms by Kid Quantum. Everyone is welcome to come, including those who have somewhat questionable backgrounds back home.
Today is a special day, after all. The UG (not UPgov, it's the United Galaxies now!) is about to unveil a massive monument to the conflict, celebrating the Legion's defeat of Chronoblivion, hovering in Earth orbit. The team has tried to avoid such a grand gesture and all the pomp and circumstance, naturally, but UGgov has been insistent. It's taken them five whole years to build it.
"Probably pushing it out of guilt," says Timber Wolf, while discussing it with some of the others as everyone walks in from the T-gate hubs where their magic Time Trapper brands allowed them to enter the Legion's universe.
"Totally guilt," says Bouncing Boy.
"Was that ever in question?" asks Umbra.
The rebuilt Legion World is even better than the last, and the viewing deck is gorgeous, decorated with multi-colored alien plants and many sculptures. There are lots of couches and comfortable chairs, and some tables for those that want to grab a snack. The large viewscreen, wrapping around a significant section of ship, looks out on the brilliant blue and green marble of a planet below. The ship is hovering near a massive structure, hidden with holographic screens by floating drones. The actual monument won't be visible until the grand unveiling, but it is huge, clearly the size of one of the UP's heavy cruisers.
Most of the native Legionnaires are in their formal-wear but a few stubborn ones like Umbra and Brainy have shown up in their usual uniforms. Alongside Legionnaires and Legion staff, UG officials and other important UG figures are wandering around.
A holographic banner flickering near the entrance from the T-gate hub says "Welcome Legionnaires." A table is spread out with various snacks and hors d'oeuvres, all of them alien and yet likely still somewhat familiar. The chefs here at Legion World haven't forgotten everyone's weird favorites, whether full meals or junk food.
Another hologram also decorates the room, near the viewing window, as if trying to give her presence a chance to see the monument meant to celebrate her too: a hologram of Blue Rose. Large bouquets of flowers, beads, alien fruit, and other objects meant to express honor are laid at her feet, the products of many cultural practices. Some are from the Legionnaires that had been active during the crisis, some are from those that were lost in the crystal dimension. Many of the native Legionnaires never met her, but the fact she died trying to take their place, died trying to protect their universe, won't be forgotten.
In the meantime, before the unveiling, everyone has a chance to say hello. Some have remained in contact, others haven't. This is a chance to catch up, and for those who haven't visited others to check in and see how they're doing.
...After the toast, of course. Kid Quantum isn't the current Legion Leader - it's currently Dreamer. But the team decides that she should be the one to welcome everyone, since she was Legion Leader at the time. Floating robotic caterers make sure everyone has access to some kind of drink, syntheholic, alcoholic, or neither, to raise a glass with.
Brainy stands besides Kid Q, smiling as he picks up a glass.
"I know it's been five years since we stopped Chronoblivion but it feels like it passed in a flash," says Kid Quantum. "And that's the gift, isn't it? Back then, we all knew what was coming, like the timer on a bomb ticking down. But since then time has rolled along with barely any notice."
Life had happened. No more ticking clock, counting down the seconds to oblivion.
"Legionnaires - especially our displacees, now eternally honorary - there's so much I could say. About what you did for the multiverse, for the two galaxies, for our worlds, and for this team. But we've all had our fair share of speeches - and I know you've especially had plenty from me. So all I'll say is this: it's wonderful to see so many familiar faces all in one place again. Thank you for being here now and thank you even more for being here when we needed you most."
She raises her glass.
"To the Legion!"
It's a time to celebrate. Five years later, after all that work hard work and training, after all that fighting, after struggling against betrayal and corruption, after all that suffering, the multiverse is still kicking.
Ain't that sprocking something?
