The "Voyage of the Clammed" Test Drive Meme

THE "VOYAGE OF THE CLAMMED" TEST DRIVE MEME

The Time Trapper, the being responsible for bringing people into the Legion's universe, is up to some strange tricks! It's now creating illusions of alternate universes and dumping the Legionnaires into them to try to test them as Legionnaires. Each time this happens, the captives -- er, participants have knowledge of the scenario, their role, and what they're supposed to accomplish planted into their heads, but still remember who they once were.

To complicate things, the Legionnaires from the 31st century aren't the only ones pulled into this adventure. Strange people from many worlds are being yanked in and finding themselves thrust right into the heart of these conflicts.

These universes are technically just illusions (probably!) and all the participants have an inherent knowledge of this placed in their heads, but it's up to them if they believe it -- and the danger is real. If you die in one of these scenarios you stay dead. This time everyone is being dumped into a scenario where they're dealing with...

THE SPACE TITANIC
THE SETTING
The Titanic II is a luxury space cruise ship named after the original Titanic by a naive Carggite owner that only knows the ship was famous and doesn't know the unfortunate history of the original. Sure enough, like its predecessor, this ship is cursed, and has hit a space icebe--er, comet. It's broken down in a very perilous area of space and has drifted into the territory of the Space Dolphins.

The Space Dolphins have an isolationist empire that spans star systems and prefers to have no contact with the outside galaxy. They are demanding that the passenger and crew of the Titanic II leave their territory immediately and are not accepting any excuses. They've given the ship a paltry half hour to evacuate when it should take at least 1-2 hours. Once the half hour is up, they plan to attack and make the Titanic II crash into a nearby uninhabited planet -- whether it's fully evacuated or not.

Characters may find that they have brand-new superpowers that can help them save the day.

SCENARIO A: BEFORE THE CRASH
Some characters will find themselves on board the cruise ship with the knowledge it's going to crash. What they do with that knowledge is up to them. Perhaps they'll try to warn the crew, or simply wait it out and prepare with others to act once it happens. Or maybe they'll try to warn passengers away from the section where the comet will impact. In the time before the ship hits the comet, they'll at least be privy to some beautiful sights as they fly past nebulas and planets, but it will be little comfort as they sit there waiting for inevitable disaster. (Maybe they can rearrange some desk chairs?)

This is the mingle option for those that want something other than an action thread.

SCENARIO B: PLACATE WITH FISHIES
After the crash, not much can be done to prevent the Space Dolphins from preparing to attack, but they can be distracted somewhat if characters find some fish to distract them with. After stealing fish from confused cooks in the kitchens, they can brave the dangerous vacuum of space to dump what they find outside to create a feeding frenzy that can delay the dolphin attack. Fortunately, there's transuit technology that will allow them to go into vacuum without being encumbered by too much gear.

SCENARIO C: HELP EVACUATE
The ship needs to be evacuated and it needs to be evacuated fast. With fires, machinery breaking down, collapsing floors and walkways, and areas suddenly being exposed to vacuum, and even some explosions, the ship is growing more and more perilous by the minute and the passengers need help and occasional rescue to make it out of dangerous areas and into the lifepods. The engine core is especially dangerous, with broken machinery trapping some of the engineers and mechanics inside, and dangerous radiation leaks that will kill them if they're not freed soon. Characters may find themselves getting into deadly peril while trying to help others, and will need to work together to survive.

The human element is also a factor here. People are getting scared and that means they need to be stopped from trampling each other, or fighting over lifepods. (There are plenty to go around).

SCENARIO D: ATTACH THE "SONAR" DEVICE
An engineer that was a passenger slapped together a device from scrap that can help buy some time by projecting a vibrational frequency that will keep the Space Dolphins a distance away. It can only work for a short time, but buying a little extra time is better than nothing. Unfortunately, it has to be directly attached to a large power source, like the ship's engine. Characters must brave perilous crawlspaces and ventilation systems (including ones with those giant spinny fans), and work together to reach the engine and attach it. (Due to the Time Trapper's meddling, this task can be done in multiple time loops, allowing multiple teams to go through the scenario).

SCENARIO E: PISS OFF SPACE PETA
Sometimes in life you just have to punch a hyperintelligent dolphin in the face. With the Space Dolphins finally attacking, it's time to take action before they damage the escaping lifepods or damage the ship enough to make it fall onto the nearby planet before it's fully evacuated. Characters have transuits that will allow them to survive in vacuum, making it so they can fight the Space Dolphins directly. Beware their head-mounted pulse weapons and ion beams, tracking missiles, and that weird painful pokey-thing dolphins do with their noses.

SCENARIO F: WILD CARD
Maybe your character wants to take a moment before the crash to re-enact the "I'm flying!" scene at the bow. Or lasso and ride an annoyed Space Dolphin. Perhaps a missing child needs to be found and reunited with a parent. Or maybe two lovers from different social classes have been separated and one needs your help to find the other. Have an idea for something that you don't see an option for? Go for it!

OOC INFO

Current players in game can jump into this and do starters if they like so they can play with new players and each other. This meme will count as part of the game canon for those that opt in, though they'll find their memories somewhat fuzzy afterward. These threads can count toward your AC, however the "new CR" credit cannot be applied since not every character joining in is guaranteed to join the game. This takes place after "Silent Horizon" and "No Sanity Clause."

Potential players can use this as a standard test drive and may use these threads as their log samples. However, at least one post in their thread must fit the requirements for apps, both in length (200 words) and in quality. If you do plan on using a thread as a sample, please make sure the writing throughout your threads is a good example of your writing skills and has some solid examples of the character's voice.

Potential players can also opt to keep these threads as game canon when they app in, so that their character remembers the scenario and then suddenly finds themselves in the game universe. However, this is opt in and players can choose to introduce their characters fresh if they'd prefer that and no other characters will remember they were there. Please just note which you'd like in the additional info field on your app.

If you are considering apping to the game, currently 5 of 40 player slots are available. The character limit is 4 characters per player. You can also scope out some of the game's upcoming plots to get an idea of what kind of plots are in the game and what's to come.

New Player Reserves will open on Friday Feb. 3 @ 10 pm EST.

Non-players who like the meme but aren't really considering apping to the game are free to jump in. The more the merrier! The Time Trapper wants a confusing situation and will enjoy the chaos of lots of strange people trying to figure out what's going on.

I. Scenario C

The smoke from electrical fires can't filter through broken-down ventilators, hangs thick and hazy in the air. Even the slightest movement makes it whirl and ripple, like so much ink in water.

Emergency red lights flash discordantly, showing the lines of passage to emergency exits. There are people coughing, people wailing, talking, so much noise that it makes something strange flex darkly in the back of his mind--

"Keep passing out that water! Dampen your sleeve, or some other fabric, hold it to your mouth when you breathe," he spoke loudly and evenly, tried to quell the loudest noises with the force of his calm. "Families and children -- if you see anyone with families and children, let them go forward ahead of you. The emergency walkway is narrow, you must go one at a time. Someone else will lead you on the other side."

Between the sound of his own talking, he leveraged the whole of his might against a half-collapsed metal door. He wasn't sure how many people were on the other side, but he wasn't going to let them stay there.

"Got your back, man," says a very young voice, and then a tiny teenage boy in a baseball cap, that looks possibly even younger than Pidge, comes up and slams a shoulder against the door, too.

His body weight does nothing, because he's a bunch of noodles stuck together in human form, but the blue telekinetic light around him helps Shiro finish the job. Between the two of them, they cave the door the rest of the way in.

Like a few of the people swarming around the wreck, the boy's in uniform, with a golden ring on his finger and a belt buckle with a golden "L."

The second the door's down, he starts looking around the room for people that need rescue.

Shiro doesn't quite allow himself to be shouldered aside so much as... simply stare dumbly at the kid who wedges himself into the work. In the pause, Shiro races to think of a diplomatic way of saying, 'that door's five times your size, there's no way--'

But then the door's crashing inward, and he's blinking the halo of blue light out of his vision.

"Whoa, careful. You shouldn't rush through a door you just bust down. Garrison procedure," the reprimand is careful, because he's scanning the room too, lips thinned, trying to see through the thick smoke and the blue-tinted flickering electrical fires, the kaleidascope of emergency lights.

The choking, tear-inducing smoke had quickly dwindled the number of conscious individuals; they only found a few still standing, weakly crying out, slumped or leaning against the walls. Shiro went immediately to duck under the arm of the most aware of these (save the living, save the living) and began to half-carry them back toward the door.

"Help whoever you can," he advised his makeshift partner(?) clamping his eyes shut against the smoke, "We'll ask others for help once we've got them to safety! We can't move this many alone."

"Don't worry, dude, I've got telekinesis," says Dipper as blue tendrils of it start ripping apart metal like tissue paper to help free some trapped people. "Running through busted-down doors is kind of my thing."

He's one of the ones that tends to barge into dangerous situations first, like the other Legionnaires that have some kind of shield power.

"And don't worry about asking for help. Just get all the people who can't walk onto something solid, like one of the floor plates. I can take care of the rest."

It sounds like a pretty big boast coming from someone so small, but he knows what he can handle at this point.

"What's your name, anyway? I'm Dipper."
nochampion: (uh huh....)

[personal profile] nochampion 2017-02-02 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
"Dipper," In a different situation, he might stare; now he just nods. "Call me Shiro. I'm a Paladin." The phrase 'I've got telekinesis' merited some kind of response, but explaining 'Defender of the Universe' and outing himself as connected to Voltron seemed unwise amidst so much unfamiliar chaos.

The kid doesn't need to work hard to convince him; after a beat, he's moving, methodically helping or pulling people onto one of the metal plates on the floor. He does his best not to jostle those who are unconscious, his wrists behind their necks, his fists bunched around the clothing at their shoulders. All the emergency first-aid stuff he doesn't know nearly well enough to call instinct, but there's something about the situation that strokes at his memory.

By the time he's done, he's sweating under his armor, face filmed with sweat. "You find yourself in these situations a lot, Dipper?" We was trying to reach for levity. No kid deserved to be stuck in this.

[personal profile] captainbuzzkill 2017-02-02 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Dipper is careful not to jostle any of the unconscious people, using his teke to lift them onto the floor panel in a way that supports their necks and spines. His first aid training was a lot more recent.

"Aalll the ti--" He starts to say, because yes, his entire life is now one long string of firey wrecks, some of them that he rescues others from, and some of them that he finds himself in, but then the "Paladin" thing registers.

"--wait a second, Paladin? You're a Paladin?" Dipper suddenly turns to face him again, eyes wide. "Do you know Pidge?"

The name is familiar. Aside from Pidge occasionally talking about back home, she even chose "Paladin" as her superhero name.

Is this one of her Giant Robot Friends?

He's only too relieved to elaborate; it keeps him from being too inward. He follows alongside the panel, arms outstretched like guardrails, hands moving to hastily adjust elbows and knees of the unconscious that look like they might bump into the door sill.

"Yes, I'm the Paladin of the--"

He doesn't get any farther than that before the questions come at rat-a-tat rate. It wrings a helpless smile from him, recalling friendly faces, and he nods quickly.

"Yeah! Pidge is..." How much does this kid know? "Pidge is part of the team." There's something in the way he says the words, some trick of tone. He says 'the team', but he means 'my team'. A sense of possession and closeness like one claiming family. "How did you two meet?"
captainbuzzkill: (050)

[personal profile] captainbuzzkill 2017-02-02 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
Dipper tries to think of a way to explain it that makes sense.

There really isn't one.

For a second he focuses on finishing the job. They've either freed all the victims that can walk or gathered all the ones that can't. Blue tendrils of teke curl around the metal panel like living things, shearing metal and lifting the entire plate off the floor, with everyone on it.

It takes a fair bit of effort and concentration, but again, by now, he's used to this. Keeping up conversations (and even quipping) mid-rescue is by now a beloved team past-time.

Sweat beads on his face as he also breaks open the door they'd come in through -- and the walls around it -- to widen it enough for his little floating tray of injured people. He starts floating the giant multi-person metal...stretcher-boat(?) through.

"She's part the of the team," he parrots back, with a little grin and the same familiarity. "A cosmic entity kidnapped us from our universe and threw us into a superhero universe in the far future, to try to force us to become superheroes and prevent an omnicidal apocalypse."

That's probably the most succinct way anyone could explain it.

They reach the other side of the door, where ship medics run up because they can now reach the injured and unconscious people.

"Incidentally."

Dipper gestures at the ship around them.

"There's a reason you're here. And that cosmic-ey voice we heard? He does this a lot. We think it's some kind of test."

"Shiro?"

On the list of voices Pidge is glad to hear right now, Shiro's is at the top. If only she was on HIS side of the door, it'd be perfect but she can't afford to be picky.

"Shiro! Is that you?" She has injured and sick and scared and she thinks there's someone trapped where she can't see. "I need some help!"
nochampion: (not gonna let it happen again...)

The voice on the other side is muffled by the door, but he knows it like the steady thrum of his own pulse.

Pidge.

All anxiety that the door might not open ebbed away, and he kept his voice even when he called back, "Help's here, Pidge. I'm right here, and this door's coming down. Tell me when you've got everyone back from it at least two or three steps."

Right...Shiro's leadership is comforting and familiar as the feeling of gripping her bayard and she's more than willing to back him up to these people.

"You heard him," she says to the assembled crowd. "Help me get these injured people back." They do what she says, dragging bodies and helping people limp away.

"We're good, Shiro! Bring it down!"

Swift, methodical, effective. Hearing at least a little through the door, he couldn't help a spare twitch of smile.

Still being great, huh?

"On 3!" He took a slow breath, closed his eyes for just a second. "One!"

He gripped the lip of the door, where the metal had buckled and warped around its pressure-sealed sill. Braced one foot against the wall, twisted his torso a little for the best leverage.

"Two!"

Part of working hard was working smart; he didn't just leverage out but to rotate the door, using its own warped shape to help lever it off its last remaining hinge.

"Three!"

The real heave of teeth-grit effort. Eyes clamped shut, filled with a heady desperation he'd never admit after the fact, the servos of his mechanical arm whirring with effort, the door finally rolled aside. Panting, sweating, he squinted into the smoke,

"Pidge! Who needs the most help out?"
isthisapidge: ([38])

[personal profile] isthisapidge 2017-02-02 05:33 am (UTC)(link)
The groaning and creaking of the door clearly scares some of the engineers in the room, who are very aware of the weaknesses in the ship's structural integrity. Pidge tries to look as determined and confident as she can, even as SHE picks apart the way the room could crumble and send them all out into the void of space.

But then it gives, and the pathway is open, and Pidge bolts to Shiro.

Who needs the most help out? Easy. She points down the walkway to a dark hole in the path that could have been an elevator shaft before all this happened.

"I there's someone down there. I can't see them, it looks like there's some rubble blocking the shaft and..."

Her cheeks go a little red, and she averts her eyes for just a moment. This isn't the time to be irritated over things she can't change. "And I'm too short to get them out."
nochampion: (you done good)

[personal profile] nochampion 2017-02-04 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good work, Pidge," he exhaled, corners of his mouth twitched up in a spare smile. The rush of anxiety he'd felt when she was trapped rushed away, leaving him feeling more certain of the ground he stood on, and he nodded quickly.

"You've helped a lot of people already; and height had nothing to do with it. I need you to lead those who can go out of here. I've set up a line to the lifeboats, make sure they join it and they're being helped - then join me back here. Okay?"
isthisapidge: ([59])

[personal profile] isthisapidge 2017-02-07 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
"Got it."

She didn't realize how much she missed having Shiro around until he actually started to give orders. It's not that she couldn't do this herself, but Shiro just always seems to know what to do when it needs to get done. Not like Pidge who could think herself to death if allowed.

Leading people out is easy. They're all eager to get, and they know she's Legion and once they're in the line for the lifeboats the robotic helpers can take over in helping the injured.

Getting back to Shiro doesn't even take her that long. "Everyone's accounted for! What's next?"
turntex: (pic#10642698)

[personal profile] turntex 2017-02-02 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
"No one ever teach you the basic principles of mechanics? Jesus christ, what's wrong with schools these days?"

Suddenly at Shiro's side, making an unimpressed face at either the half-collapsed door or Shiro's attempts at getting it open -- hard to say with those shades -- was a blond teen wearing what kind of looked like red pajamas with a cape and wielding a sword. Clearly, exactly the kind of help needed in this moment.

Elbowing himself some room in front of the door, Dave wedged the end of his sword in a little gap at the edge of the doorframe like a makeshift crowbar, and leaned into it with all his body weight. Unfortunately, that's still only the body weight of a lanky teenager. Glancing over his shoulder at the man, he arched an eyebrow over the rim of his shades.

"C'mon, put some of that beef to use. Slam it on this shit like its a hot grill and the kids are starvin'."
nochampion: (glad you noticed)

[personal profile] nochampion 2017-02-02 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Shiro's eyes widened a little in surprised amusement at all that chiding, and his lips thinned as he suppressed his first instinct. This wasn't a cadet, wasn't someone who fell into the chain of command. But it rubbed familiar all the same.

Mouthy.

"You do look like you could eat more..."

He said it helpfully, and a little too cheerfully to sound pedantic, all while setting his hands on the blade of the sword -- letting Dave keep prying at the handle. And then he added his weight to the sum, the servos in his false arm whirring with the effort. Like a bull throwing himself into the yoke, it was a singleminded effort.

The metal began to groan, the door to buckle.

"C'mon!" he hissed through grit teeth. "Little more!"
turntex: (pic#10642727)

[personal profile] turntex 2017-02-02 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
"Careful," Dave cautioned, miraculously deadpan for someone straining hard at prying a door open, "You're setting up for some serious beef-slash-penis wordplay, and I appreciate the potential there for well a well-timed suggestion to eat dick, but let me just point out that I'm sixteen and still a minor where I come from."

Mercifully, Shiro joined in on the effort before he could further elaborate, and they jointly pushed like someone's life was on the line. Which, well. It might be, who can say what's behind this door?

The blade of the sword snapped in half at the same time the door finally jolted forward somewhat away from its frame. Not quite wide open, but certainly enough for a person to squeeze through, and probably easier to get the rest of the way open now that there was some room to work with.

For his part, Dave stumbled forward with the snapping blade, yelping and just narrowly catching himself before he could slam his face right into a wall.
nochampion: (uh huh....)

[personal profile] nochampion 2017-02-04 07:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Shiro was so wrong-footed by that crassness that he just stared in suppressed horror for a second. Panted with effort while he threw his weight against the makeshift crowbar like a bull to the yoke.

"I... just meant you were shrimpy."

Expression dissolving into a steady scowl, he didn't say any more than that. Considered apologizing about the sword -- realized it might just involve more conversation -- and pressed his lips tightly together, turning toward the work of widening the doorway.

He levered his shoulder into the half-open doorway and used arms and legs braced against the wall to shove it open wider still with the thickly-muscled bow of his back and shoulder.
turntex: (pic#10642697)

[personal profile] turntex 2017-02-04 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Steadying himself, Dave just shrugged, poker face already back in place. He spared the broken-off end of the sword only a glance before kicking it aside, though he notably held onto the half with the hilt.

"Sorry for being a pretty average height and weight for a teenage human male," he said, not sounding particularly bothered. "We can't all be cyborg bodybuilders. And I dunno about you, since I clearly don't have the same experience with being unnecessarily buff, but 'shrimpy' can totally get through that gap already. Check it."

Neatly, he ducked through the space between Shiro's body and the doorframe. Keep up, old man, there's people to save and shit.
nochampion: (harden your resolve)

[personal profile] nochampion 2017-02-05 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Opening the door doesn't do any good if the people inside can't get out, and it's all but guaranteed that most won't be as small as Dave; with a short eyeroll, Shiro pauses only long enough for Dave to slither in past him.

And then resumes his effort, body and mechanical arm straining until the prosthetic's servos are hissing smoke and his hair is drenched in sweat and the door gives way with a slow, screeching groan.

Tamping down an uncharitable retort, Shiro reminds himself to keep his head in the game, ducking through the darkened doorway after Dave, blinking had and fast against the smoke which rolled out of the new entryway in waves. "If you can walk out yourself, please hurry! This level's unstable. If you need help, call out while our eyes adjust!"

There was a coughing cacophony of voices that answered.
turntex: (pic#10642694)

[personal profile] turntex 2017-02-05 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
A handful of people make their way out of the smoky room, but there were a good number still scattered about the half-collapsed room in need of help. Dave was already crouched beside an unmoving figure, a child hovering by his shoulder while he got his arms under the body. His shades were pushed up atop his head, presumably useless in such a dark and smoke-filled room.

"Chill, little man, I got her," he was saying, in the middle of some meaningless string of babble that at least seemed to be doing an okay job of keeping the kid distracted. "Wanna just hang onto my cape? It's soft as shit, you can admit it. Fuck, uhh, better idea, just climb on up, that'll be faster..."

Dave held still a few moments to let the child clamber up onto his shoulders, then straightened with a soft hup and only a little staggering under the combined weight of kid and (hopefully just unconscious) mom. Turning back to the door, he nodded a bit absently at Shiro.

"Door wide open? Cool. Move fast, dude."

And suddenly, he vanished, along with his passengers.

A young boy in blue and cyan armor sticks out among the crowd - he looks concerned and confused, but not in the same manner as the passengers. He's also wearing a Legion ring and buckle, which honestly clash with his aesthetic terribly. That may be for the better, though, given that they stick out.

Rock isn't sure how to help just yet - there's only so much he can do with robotic strength and a buster. At least, that's what he thinks when internally, he gets an update - courtesy of the Time-Trapper, the weapons data from Doctor Light's other Robot Masters. That'll be handy!

With a quick color-shift and weapon-change, he approaches Shiro - there's clearly other people on the other side of this door. His fingers dig into the metal with a grunt, and he starts to pull - if he used the Super Arm to punch it, well, that might hurt folks on the other side.

"Lemme give you a hand, Mister!"

The kid might be around half Shiro's height, and the young man blinked, looking down at him.

He can't be old enough for this, he started to think... and then checked himself, teeth lightly closing on the tip of his tongue. They didn't have time for age to matter.

"Let's coordinate," he advised, moving to give the boy-in-blue more space towards the bottom of the door, while he shifted his leverage to its top. "On three, okay? One... two... three!"
willnotkill: (It's go time.)

[personal profile] willnotkill 2017-02-07 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
It'd be a bad time to bring up his actual age being maybe a whole year, wouldn't it?

Yeah, that can be brought up a lot later.

It takes Rock a moment to realize what Shiro's doing, but he catches on fast enough. "Gotcha!" He nods at the countdown suggestion, and once they hit three, he tears the door backwards with all his might.
