TEST DRIVE MEME

TEST DRIVE MEME

Pick a scenario!

Scenario A: The Legion has been invited to a fancy reception with the United Planets Council because various public officials and dignitaries want to meet with the new Legionnaires. Even the older Legionnaires don't want to go, but they've been told that if they bring the rookies they'll get some funding and resources to work on their project of getting the newbies home.

So everyone's put on their best color-changing dresses and self-tying ties and are getting to work rubbing elbows and trying to pretend they actually want to be there.

Naturally, while some of the dignitaries are polite and genuinely interested in the plight of the interdimensional refugees, many of the dignitaries are downright rude in various ways, either by making the rookies feel as if they'll never measure up to the old Legion (as if being brought into this world is some fault of theirs) or by being condescending when hearing about their comparatively "primitive" worlds. ("Oh, you still use fossil fuels there? How quaint!") Some like the green-skinned Coluans are outright hostile, telling the rookies that by helping the Legion, they're betraying organic life because of the Legion's support of Robotica.

A fun time is being had by all, naturally.

Okay, that's a lie, but at least the rookies have each other to talk to, right? And there's no dearth of weird future fashion to quietly make fun off.

Scenario B: The reception is under attack! A Xanthan terrorist group has busted in and plans on taking some of the dignitaries hostage in exchange for some of their number being released from prison.

"Nobody move and no one has to get hurt!" the leader cries out, his gun pointed at Madame President.

Unfortunately for them, the Legion got a last-minute invite to this little shindig. Time to team up with one of your teammates to kick some butt and practice those quips!

REMINDER:

There are only 30 player slots in the game. We do want to remind players of that at each step towards game opening, just so they're aware during the reserve/app process that these slots might fill fast. We've also moved the opening of reserves a day to make it more convenient for the mods. Here are the current dates for upcoming events:

RESERVES WILL OPEN ON: 12/20/15 @ 5PM EST/2PM PST/10PM GMT
APPS WILL OPEN ON: 12/26/15 @ 5PM EST/2PM PST/10PM GMT
GAME STARTS ON: 1/01/16

"Don't let 'em get to you. Some people are just jerks. That's on them, not you." Speed whispered. He'd had enough people bring up Rex as a benchmark around him to have learned that much.

"It's a little bit hard to," Bobby replied. "I mean, first, there was the whole Hey-lets-meet-your-future-closeted-self-and-see-how-much-he-hates-you bit. Now there's this being a designer imposter knock-off thing." Bobby pursed his lips. "At least I had a reason to feel kind of inferior to my future self." It was weird, knowing that there was someone out there with powers similar to his. It wasn't something he'd run into yet. He probably wouldn't have minded as much if it wasn't for the constant comparisons.

"They're not really comparing you, though." Speed said, shaking his head. "They're comparing some version of you they made up in their heads. They haven't really seen you in action, they aren't even trying to get to know you. Heck, I'm willing to bet my Grand Prix cup most of these people have never even met this Polar Boy guy either."

That had been something all of the people who gave him crap over Rex haad in common, Speed reflected. None of them had ever known Rex. They just spouted off stuff they'd heard second-hand.

Bobby sighed. He reached out and plucked a glass off the tray of a cater waiter walking past them. He looked at the pale, barely mint-coloured liquid in the glass and tentatively took a sip.

Okay.

It tasted sweet. Tart. A little slimy.

He passed the glass on to another cater waiter.

"I know the voice of experience when I hear it," Bobby said after a beat. "Mostly because my friend Scott kind of sounded like that when he had to deal with his future self." Who, thankfully, had been more of a screw up than Bobby's had been. "How did you deal?"

He shrugged. "I realized, in the long run, their opinions don't really matter. There's only about six people who's opinions actually do matter to me right now. Seven if you count Chim-Chim." Which Speed did, even if not everyone else would.

"The public can turn on you in an instant," he added, recalling the incident at Fuji, when the press accused him of cheating, and almost everyone else started following suit. "It's better to focus on making the people who care about you proud. Anybody else is just a bonus."

"Oh, I know all about the public turning on someone," Bobby said. "Back home, they're not so fond of people with a mutant x-gene. You know, a genetic...something-something that gives us our powers." Bobby shrugged. "My teammates understand it a little better than I do, honestly." Which wasn't so say that he didn't get it, because he did. They just tended to grasp it a little bit better than him. "But you're right. These snobs. Their opinions? Not so much with the mattering." They'd save the galaxy and people would love them for a week before turning on them again. It was how this hero thing worked, wasn't it? Unless you were named Captain America?

It was funny. He could shift into snow form, but he couldn't turn himself cold to their comments. "Gonna take some time to fully embrace that though." He smiled at Speed. "Who do you focus on?"

"Took me a while too. My parents, my girlfriend Trixie, my little brother, and his pet chimpanzee. And another driver I know who helped me out of a few tight spots."

Racer X might not have been Rex, as far as Speed himself knew, but he still considered the so-called Harbinger of Boom a good friend.

"I'm not sure my parents are the...best people to focus on." Bobby's dad was something of a...conservative man who overly valued the sort of outdated masculine values that made him seem as though he wasn't at all progressive. His mother had mostly only ever been his father's yes-woman. It had been pitiful and terrible and Xavier coming to take Bobby away had been one of the greatest things ever.

He was finally allowed to dream again.

"But then my friends. Scott, Jean, Hank. Warren. Maybe not so much Professor Pryde because she wasn't a big fan of future me." No big surprise, considering the secrets future-Bobby had been keeping. "Maybe eventually my teammates here, once we build more of a rapport."
