IC ANON MEME

THE IC ANON MEME

RULES AND INFO

Everything must be from an IC in-world perspective. The meme is specifically a Legion fandom meme. UP citizens, Legion World Staff, and Legionnaires all have access to the meme. While this meme is in the meme comm, it is real in the game universe and all the Legionnaires and the public can see it ICly. Rather than other ic anon memes where characters post starters to the meme, this meme operates like real world memes like rpanons.

There are 3 ways to post. When posting as non-Legionnaires, do it anon. When posting as Legionnaires that unwisely comment unanon, just do it logged in. If posting as Legionnaires going anon, do it logged in, but mark "anon" in the subject, so we know it's anon, but can have a laugh over which Legionnaires are secretly stanning or shitposting.

Not necessarily a rule, but keep in mind that attitudes in the UP are different than our world. Most people are referred to generally as "people" or "sentients" instead of species-specific terms like "humans." Most racist, homophobic, transphobic, sexist, and other "ist" attitudes are now uncommon among most species in the UP. Many sexual orientations exist, polyamory and polygamy are considered acceptable, and gender identity is very flexible. Species-based xenophobia tends to be the bigger social ill and even with that, many are against it. The species that are most disliked and distrusted are Durlans, Daxamites, and Roboticans. If you want to use them for fun, common UP cursewords are on the Legion Basics page.

Beyond sticking to those basics, don't worry about getting anything "wrong." It's a meme and people tend to say stupid things on memes. You can even make up fake species and planets and details about them. The UP is huge and has lots of planets and species not mentioned in the game info.

You can pretend to write things from the POV of Legion staff sharing the deets on the Legionnaires. However, they wouldn't share tactical info on the Legionnaires that could get them hurt in battle, only juicy gossip. Also, if someone is writing from the POV of Legion staff and writes something about your character that your character doesn't actually do, keep in mind that half the time people make shit up. It'll just be false gossip.

Try to keep anything that can't be put behind a link sfw. While you can write someone sharing the start of their steamy slash fanfic, try to keep it limited to just part of it. Linking to fanart as if it was made in universe is a-okay, but just make sure to put it under a link and warn if it it's nsfw. Please check character ages before posting any nsfw stuff to make sure they're over 18.

Feel free to get really crazy. Fandom gets crazy and fandom is no different in the glorious robot future. There are normal posters, shitposters, trolls, rpf ficcers, stans, slashers, all the same things our time has. There are macros and gifs and ongoing fake memes you can make up. There will be a few preposted topics but you can make up new ones or just have anons create new topics or troll.

The meme is generally modless and has no thread-freezing. Fandom plays it dangerous in the future and the ic mod rarely intervenes, though anons sometimes try to get them to. Anon comments can be deleted by the real mods at the request of players (like say if they made a formatting mistake and want to repost) but there should be no need to delete anything beyond that since it's all IC.

They're from over a thousand years in the past. They still don't see how eating meat is cruel, use water to bathe, their ideas on physics are laughable, they don't have antigrav or interstellar travel...

They ARE primitive. I bet some of them don't even use emissions-free vehicles back home! Most of their societies are still inventing the wood that the building blocks of our modern civilization is built on.

Yeah, and we as sentient beings, emerged fully-formed and enlightened from our cocoons, eggs, wombs, and birthing chambers, right?

Wrong. We were taught everything we believe, in a world where all of those things were already provided for us.

It's easy to take the high ground on eating meat when we live in a society with universal healthcare, where the government takes care of all our needs.

But even people in the UP have resorted to eating meat during times of great unrest. Remember when the Blight attacked Earth? With everything trashed, people scavenged for food in the wreckage but they also had to resort to eating what wildlife they could catch.

Just because their societies haven't evolved to the point of universally being able to produce alternate protein sources, doesn't mean they're backwards or savage.

Also water is...weird, but exposure to low levels of bacteria are scientifically proven to help in the healthy development of the immune systems of most sentients. With the sanitized existence we all live, after years of our immune systems not having to reckon with any major diseases, I bet they could out-survive pathogens that could sweep out most of the rest of us.

And it's not like our society is free of flaws. Look at the xenophobia against Durlans, for instance. None of these supposed "primitives" have seemed to even bat a eyeflap at working with or protecting totally alien species that don't even exist in their home universes.

see if you still feel that way when they're eating your pets

People . . . invented trees?

[Kubo accidentally takes a picture of his expression, which is equal parts bewildered and skeptical as all get-out.]

what do you know about breeding for traits?
bachido: (angry playing)

[personal profile] bachido 2016-11-22 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Uh - I don't.

[Now the stranger is talking to him about breeding. Why. He thought he was skirting these discussions.]

(Anonymous) 2016-11-22 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
okay, basically, when you get two things with traits you want, you breed them until they produce offspring that has most or all of the traits you desire.

one plant has large fruit, but it's bitter. one plant has sweet, but small, fruit. we breed the two until we get large, sweet fruit.

we've invented a new type of plant based on the two older ones.

see what i mean?

...while that's a pretty accurate description of plant interbreeding, I think the OP just meant it as a turn of phrase.

Kubo, if you take anything from this, it's that plant anon and Flash are nerds.

neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerds

You can't hear it, but I'm laughing.

I am interested in knowing why eating meat is considered cruel, actually. It was never clearly explained to me.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 06:17 am (UTC)(link)
To supply the billions of people who ate meat, animals were kept in barbaric conditions, force-fed unnatural diets, bred to the point where their bodies couldn't naturally sustain themselves in order to produce more attractive portions, and the slaughterhouse conditions were nightmarish.

On Earth, some birds were incapable of mating on their own and required outside intervention because they'd been bred to put so much meat on the bone that they were physically incapable of following their instincts.

Then why not simply forbid the conditions that led to that? minimize hunting in heavily-hunted areas?

Forcing everyone to cease to eat food we are meant to have seems unnecessary.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-07 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hunting was another issue entirely. People hunted entire species of animals to extinction, even after it was declared illegal to hunt them, in their superstitious beliefs about the health benefits various body parts. Some hunters would take the meat, others would only take the parts that were worth money. Sometimes they'd mangle them, take what they wanted, and leave the defenseless animal alive and unable to recover.

People grew animals on farms, but that just lead to the conditions mentioned. When those conditions became illegal, farmers did them anyway and just kept things secret. Eventually, synthetic meat or meat alternatives like tofu and enhanced proteins came out and we could get the dietary benefits of meat without torturing or killing any animals at all.
