"The Great Hover-Train Robbery" Test Drive Meme

"THE GREAT HOVER-TRAIN ROBBERY" TEST DRIVE MEME

The Time Trapper, the being responsible for bringing people into the Legion's universe, is up to some strange tricks! It's now creating illusions of alternate universes and dumping the Legionnaires into them to try to test them as Legionnaires. Each time this happens, the captives -- er, participants have knowledge of the scenario, their role, and what they're supposed to accomplish planted into their heads, but still remember who they once were.

To complicate things, the Legionnaires from the 31st century aren't the only ones pulled into this adventure. Strange people from many worlds are being yanked in and finding themselves thrust right into the heart of these conflicts.

These universes technically are just illusions (probably!) and all the participants have an inherent knowledge of this placed in their heads, but it's up to them if they believe it -- and the danger is real. If you die in one of these scenarios you stay dead. This time everyone is being dumped into a scenario where they're dealing with...

THE WILD WEST (SORT OF)
THE SETTING

The planet Osiris is a frontier world, on the very edges of UP space. Originally colonized by Earthers of many species, Osiris has a diverse makeup just like Earth, with many different species living together. Due to being surrounded by a particular configuration of stars, star weights crush and twist spacetime near the planet, making both threshold travel and conventional FTL possible only every few months. This has led to the Osirans leading a very self-sufficient lifestyle. This also means that the Osirans have a mix of advanced technology and simpler, more reliable machines that can easily be repaired without outside supplies.

The end result is a frontier planet that has a mix of advanced technology and simpler living, resembling a slightly more technologically advanced Wild West.

While some ships are used for travel across the planet, there is an impressive hover-train network that allows for long-range and short-range travel over the planet's surface. The characters will find themselves on a hover-train passing through the rugged, dusty wilderness. Due to occasional rockslides, and dust and electrical storms in the area, the train is a low speed local train...

One that's under attack by bandits! The bandits are riding on hover-bikes and armed with blasters.

While this is possibly one of the Time Trapper's strange pocket dimensions, this dimension is very similar to the game universe, and whether or not the sentient beings in need of saving are real or not is impossible to tell. It's a bad idea to risk not helping them in case real lives are on the line.

Based on player preference, for the purposes of the meme, characters can either lose powers, retain their canon powers, or find themselves with new powers. It's up to you. Characters may also find themselves in Wild West style clothing and in possession of stun blasters, but this is also player preference. For any scenario that would typically be done only once, like stopping the train, multiple players can still play the same scenario out because of the Time Trapper creating multiple timelines of the setting.

SCENARIO A: TRAINTOP BATTLE
With bandits jumping on the train, characters have a chance to participate in a classic traintop battle, either in dangerous blaster/stun weapon shootouts, or in hand to hand combat. This is the best place to keep the bandits from getting on board, but watch out! Occasional overhead obstacles and tunnels mean certain death for anyone that doesn't duck in time.

SCENARIO B: HOSTAGES
Trouble's brewing inside! With so many bandits jumping onboard, a few are sure to make it inside unscathed. One of the passenger compartments is now occupied, with bandits guarding each exit and holding the civilians inside as hostages.

A frontal assault will be tricky, with the passengers in such a risky position, but maybe there's another way to get inside? Like those handy vents on top of the train, or perhaps through the maintenance hatches accessible via a dangerous climb through the undercarriage of the train.

SCENARIO C: DIVERTING THE TRAIN
Oh no, it seems the bandits have diverted the train, planning on making it crash after their robbery to kill any witnesses. The only chance of saving it is knocking some of the bandits off their hover-cycles and stealing them so the characters can ride ahead and hit the railroad switch to divert the train back to a safe track. The only problem with this is that anyone stealing a hover-cycle can't do it alone. One person needs to steer and they need another to help shield their driver with their powers, or give their driver covering fire. or they'll never survive the drive to the rail switch.

SCENARIO D: STOPPING THE TRAIN
All other efforts have failed and the train is careening out of control towards a downed bridge that was taken out by the bandits with explosives. The characters have to make their way to the locomotive at the front of the train and work together to figure out what levers to pull to stop the train in time -- without the help of the currently unconscious engineer and with only minutes to spare. There's a paper manual in the engine car that can potentially help them...but it's 1000 pages long with a very badly organized index.

Good luck!

SCENARIO E: WILD CARD!
Perhaps the characters find themselves on the side of the bandits and have to decide if they want to switch sides or follow through with the robbery. Or instead of a cowboy adventurer already poised to fight the bandits, maybe your character starts as a passenger on the train, and has to act from the inside of a hostage situation. Maybe some bandits fly in on buggalos and the characters have to steal one to fight them in an aerial battle. Or perhaps the characters have to race to the last train car and work together to unhinge it before the fire on board it ignites several tons of explosives. The choice is yours!

OOC INFO

Current players in game can jump into this and do starters if they like so they can play with new players and each other. This meme will count as part of the game canon for those that opt in, though they'll find their memories somewhat fuzzy afterward. These threads can count toward your AC, however the "new CR" credit cannot be applied since not every character joining in is guaranteed to join the game. This takes place after "Tinker, Tailor, Hero, Spy," but before "Welcome to Murderworld."

Potential players can use this as a standard test drive and may use these threads as their log samples. However, at least one post in their thread must fit the requirements for apps, both in length (200 words) and in quality. If you do plan on using a thread as a sample, please make sure the writing throughout your threads is a good example of your writing skills and has some solid examples of the character's voice.

Potential players can also opt to keep these threads as game canon when they app in, so that their character remembers the scenario and then suddenly finds themselves in the game universe. However, this is opt in and players can choose to introduce their characters fresh if they'd prefer that and no other characters will remember they were there. Please just note which you'd like in the additional info field on your app.

If you are considering apping to the game, currently 7 of 40 player slots are available. (Note: Recently, the player cap decreased from 50 to 40, which means the game is now closer to cap.) The character limit is 4 characters per player. You can also scope out some of the game's upcoming plots here to get an idea of what kind of plots are in the game and what's to come.

Non-players who like the meme but aren't really considering apping to the game are free to jump in. The more the merrier! The Time Trapper wants a confusing situation and will enjoy the chaos of lots of strange people trying to figure out what's going on.

"Will do. Friendly fire's something I generally try to avoid."

Just as a general rule. In North's experience, firing on your teammates, even accidentally, has never really worked out.

North follows a few steps behind, also alert and checking for any sort of movement. It's times like these where he misses Theta. Having that extra help had always been useful, and he'd always been a bit faster at picking things up on the motion trackers.

"I'm picking up some movement down below, but it doesn't look like they've noticed us just yet."

In Jade's defense, she'd been firing nowhere near his direction at the time. But stuff like that doesn't matter when fighting an ultimate spirit dog furry thing with space-warping powers.

"How d'you wanna do this then?" Dave asked, pausing over a closed hatch he'd finally discovered. "Bust in guns-a-blazing? Ninja tactics? Knock on the roof and politely ask them to let us in and release the hostages?"

B.

Someone once said that a day where you don't learn anything is a day you wasted. Today, Junkrat learned that trains are a lot more fragile than they look and it's very easy to overshoot the amount of explosives you need to get inside! So instead of a lovely hole in the train-car roof for himself and his mates it's more like...the whole side is just gone, debris bouncing through the dust as they sped on.

"Whoops! Well, they sure weren't expectin' that, were they?!"

E. Go nuts! Junkrat already has done!

"I don't think I've ever seen the last one work so I think we can take it off the list," North replies, coming over to the hatch. "And I'm not exactly equipped for an all out assault, so let's go with the ninja tactics."

He considers for a moment.

"I can probably act as a decent distraction."

At that offer, Dave pauses and looks up at North, staring for a moment. At least, it seems like he's probably staring. It's hard to tell with the shades. Dave silently gets to his feet, steps to the side, and then gestures grandly at the rooftop hatch.

"After you, then."

[B: Hostages.]

Now considering the whole situation here? Rarity was doing her best to keep her complaints small, especially since she did get quite a nice outfit that seemed to fit the aesthetic of this world (and she likes it), but one cannot blame her for what she's about to say the the fellow 'hero' she's with. Which is on the other side of a train car door, which leads to the one car that has hostages and in her opinion too many hoodlums as well.

"So, just allow me to get this 'plan' right here," her words are spoken at a low level and heck, she even air quotes the word plan. That is how much she is very much not in favor of this. "Is to bust into that train car and, if we are lucky, save everyone and not get ourselves killed."

Rarity leaves the briefest of pauses, as if waiting for the person she is talking to to reply before she simply continues. Her voice going higher pitched, getting as close to a screech as a girl can while also staying quiet.

"Are you crazy, darling?!"

[C: Diverting or Get on the hover bike.]

"No, nope. I am not risking this outfit just to jump from a speeding train on to some equally dangerous motorcycle!" Rarity may be complaining about it, but honestly it looks like she and the person she's with are the only not innocent locals at the moment who are actually capable of doing this.

This being trying to get out of the train, on to one of the hijackers bike-things and trying to divert the train via outside means.

But she is not going to make this easy for the poor unfortunate soul she's paired with, and she's not even doing it on purpose. It's just how she is, sadly.

Dave seems unimpressed with her complaints, standing in front of the door to the next traincar over with his hands in his pockets. At least, he probably comes across as unimpressed, between the poker face and the shades. He can be hard to read, unfortunatelu.

"There could -- and probably have been -- papers written on whatever psychoses I probably have." Rose certainly liked to both psychoanalyze him and write, and who knows what that girl got up to in her spare time. "But my theoretical insanity aside, we're supposed to be playing the heroes here, so I'm not seeing ang other options. Unless you got a better idea, darlin'?"

He may have let a bit of Texan slip into his speech there. Some things you just gotta say with that drawl.
magnanime: (Ugh so gross)

[personal profile] magnanime 2016-10-11 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Dave can be unimpressed and unreadable all he likes, Rarity still thinks it's a poor plan. Especially since her powers aren't exactly made for fighting. Protecting people? Yes, but not beating up train robbers.

That and she doesn't exactly have a better idea, and he just had to ask if she did too. Hope he doesn't mind her being quiet for a moment as she tries to think of something better, before she huffs and gives her reply.

"Unfortunately no, I don't have a better idea," her voice is still in that whispered-stressed screech tone, as she tries to get herself prepared for what is most likely to come next. "But I am going to tell you, my powers aren't made for beating up thugs. I am able to cover you though, dear."

Dave may have his Texan drawl slip into his words, but Rarity isn't going to point it out right now. She'll save those comments for after.

"Fine by me. I can handle the thug beating myself. I'll beat that shit so hard Michael Jackson himself will rise from the dead to give me a sweet fistbump for how funky and strong my fight is."

Don't worry about it too much if none of that made sense. He does have a tendency of just going on about nothing like that.

Now, Dave's pretty sure he's capable of taking out some robbers. He definitely had some sweet moves before the game began, after all. But he might have gotten a bit used to working with his game powers, and he can feel that they aren't working like he's used to here, feel it like he can feel the steady progression of seconds ticking by. And it's just a little unnerving to be going mostly back to basics, unsure of whether or not even the whole "heroic or just death" immortality rules still apply.

"So," he adds, trying to sound as chill and unaffected as ever. "What kind of cover can you provide? Gotta know what I'm working with, right?"

Rarity is somewhat used to silly rambling, she is best friends with Pinkie Pie after all. And that girl is the queen of strange ramblings. So Dave is in the clear on that, even if she's giving him the slightest of confused looks at that babbling of his.

And good thing Dave can keep up the facade of being calm and collected. Rarity is doing her best to keep calm and hey! Him asking what she can do is a good way to get her to focus on it.

"Ah yes, that," it's now her turn to sound calm and collected, and look a bit smug. "I can make this diamond like gem as a shield, it's very effective and I've used it to save myself and my friends before."

Against a magic crazy plant lady which is a different beast from this. But she's not going to mention that.

"Alright, leave it to me. I'll draw their attention towards the far door and you get the hostages out through the other one?"

Based on his knowledge of a train car, which isn't a whole lot if he's being honest, that was probably the best way to start. Hopefully, things would work themselves out.

"S'good a plan as any."

Assuming there's no robbers in the next car over. But hey, they're being optimistic here. Dave glances down at the hatch, thoughtful for a moment, before moving over to the side of the car roof by the far end. Probably better not to just drop through the ceiling if he's supposed to be letting North keep their attention.

Crouched by the edge of the roof, ready to swing down through a window, Dave shoot North a cool look and a thumbs up. Mission is a go.

North returns the look with a nod and a thumbs up as well.

He pauses for a moment and takes a breath, allowing himself to slip back into combat mode before grabbing the hatch, pulling it open and jumping into the car. He takes a quick stock of the car, noting the hostages largely gathered behind him, and the various robbers now staring at him. He counts about five and quickly draws his pistol.

"Howdy," he says, keeping with the theme, "I'm going to have to ask you all to release the hostages and maybe we won't have any problems."

He starts moving towards the robbers and the other end of the car as well.

Chris gave a small but very visible sigh. "Look, I know it's not ideal but we can't just do nothing! I'm not willing to let these people get hurt because of these robbers. And this is the best option quietly, instead of a frontal attack. My powers aren't really suited to that sort of tactic." Chris was a tad annoyed at Rarity but tried not to let it show.

"Besides... I've ridden motorcycles before, so I can probably ride these."
magnanime: (Disgusted)

Poor Chris then, because his words do not move her. In fact if he had just remained silent and not voiced his dubious claims? He could have easily won her over.

But alas, he did and now in Rarity's eyes? He's as ugly as matching plaid with stripes.

"I do believe I shall take my chances with trying to stop the train while remaining on it."

"If you give me a second, I can probably take him out." As it happened, the voice coming from next to Cayde wasn't on a hover bike, but was actually running alongside him.

Barry wasn't really considering just how weird the current situation was. He'd dealt in the strange all the time, he could save trying to figure out exactly what was happening here for after the train was rescued.
