It's a Christian holiday taking place during early spring, to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ and the coming of spring. However, many of it's traditions trace their roots to earlier European pagan celebrations that celebrated the coming of spring in a more general sense. These were absorbed into the Christian holiday as Christianity spread throughout Europe, much like how Yule traditions became part of Christmas.
