Sorry, Paperboy, stuff got in the way. I'll skip over the specifics, I'm pretty sure they're called different things on our planets.

Anyway, I melted them down, removed the impurities, then combined them into an alloy. You might not know this, but a lot of metals are actually crystalline on a microscopic nature and they can move or even change shape in different temperatures.

Once I had it done that way, I basically 'trained' the metal by bending things a certain way and applying high heat. What this did was it made the crystals inside start to shift around and hold that position. Then I cooled it so that it returned to its original format. Then I heated different parts, at a different temperature, so that the crystalline matrix inside would arrange in a different way and cooled that.

This makes the alloy 'remember' the shapes because it's been 'trained' to rearrange itself into certain structures.

With Braalians around, ferromagnetic shape memory alloys are more popular and numerous. No need for complicated procedures when they can just do this kind of thing with a wave of their hands and you can use magnetic lenses after the metals have been trained. This was basically to see if I could.
