There's a story.

An old man is starving. He's managed to gather some herbs and nuts and such, but the meal won't sustain him. But he tries to make a soup out of it anyway. Along comes a rabbit, and the old man doesn't have enough food for the both of them, but he offers the rabbit some of his meal anyway.

Realizing that the man needs more food than that if he's going to make it through the woods alive, the rabbit hurls itself into the fire so that it will cook and become a nourishing meal. Turns out, though, that the old man was a god and draws the rabbit out of the fire, unburnt, and takes it to live in a palace on the moon, where the rabbit lives for eternity making sweets for children on Earth.

Which is why the moon looks like it has a rabbit on it.
