Dragons and my people had been at war for generations. We didn't find this out until much later, but they'd attack us because their queen demanded they feed it or else be eaten themselves, and resorted to attacking us and stealing ours in order to feed her and themselves. I'd been old my entire life that dragons were evil, mindless monsters, and so when the chance came to shoot one down I took it.
I went to find where he crashed, to bring back proof that I'd done it, and found out he was just as scared of me as I was of him. I couldn't finish him off after I realized that, so I let him go, and miraculously he decided to let me go too.
I was curious about why he hadn't killed me despite everything I'd heard saying he should have, so I kept going back to where I found him, and we ended up bonding, and I decided I was going to replace the tailfin that my stupid decision lost him.
