But it's true--he can't fly, not under his own power. What magic he does have is specialized in his constructs--weapons, shields--and conjuring light. Devastating to creatures of darkness like Fearlings, merely incapacitating to humanoid eyes.
Though with how nervous Jack is around him, he is finding himself quite surprised the boy would offer assistance. He'd expected to set off another light spell and go his own way, which is why he'd called up his scythe in the first place.
