He can't really see what it is that's causing the soldiers move away from this man, but whatever it is - it's useful. He's strong and determined; good traits to have when you're out being chased by whatever these things were, Dio doesn't care. At this stage he is at a loss about how to comprehend the fact that everything is a lot more ... advanced than he remembers, and he can't exactly explain why, so he quietly takes in the scenario and analyzes it as best as he could. Anyone who chases after him not professing their faith, obviously bad. People are yelling and screaming and it's irritating. Their voices are grating on his mind, nails down a chalkboard. Their anguish inconsequential when as far as he knows nobody he's interrogated has given him a straight answer as to how to get back.

And then he hears him yell in annoyance -

- He's not one to obey a random order. But if this man is capable of defending himself, then he wants in, and he'll figure out later on just what it is that protects him and allows him to move so brazenly through this crowd.

"Stop yelling. Those who don't want to get out of the way will have their fates decided for them eventually." This man (as far as he know) doesn't know him. It would do Dio well to be as polite as he can. "If you're running to safety, I will join you."

His country boy fists aren't exactly useful here. Belatedly, Dio wonders if his look had been pathetic enough that a stranger will take pity on him. Trying to imagine how Jojo looks when he looks sad and people want to comfort him is disgusting, and he doesn't think he can stomach even the idea of emulating such a thing. But - this guy was the kind to warn off people, wasn't he? There's a chance he might not refuse.
